The love of the city . . . I love to visit the city especially at nighttime! I don’t want to live there though! I think I have a different perspective about the city at night now that I have been introduced into Noir! But I still couldn’t resist crafting a wallpaper that reflects something that I love and something that I am learning about. Definitely some dark alley ways and streets deep in this photo I took while in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last fall. I was on top of the Duquesne Incline . . .
Using PowerPoint I was able to add wording with word art and stretch the picture as far as I wanted. Trying to give a good look at how big the city of Pittsburgh is.
The creative hands – oh what they can do. I love writing which is why this assignment was so much fun. I am a little old fashioned because I would rather write pen and paper when I am doing something. One day I really want to take the time to write a book! Of course there will be note taking on my thoughts but the book would have to be typed . . . here is my daily create on Creative Hands and what I love to do:
I found this assignment to be fun and creative and very quick. I used Picasso Head for the first time and it was kind of cool. I want to experiment more with this as it seems like it can do more than just a simple sketch so to speak. Here is my daily create – Happy Birthday David!!
Last week seemed to be a better week as I really began to understand things more and more. Watching the weekly video is always helpful and I like that you can go back to it and listen again to make sure you have things right.
I went ahead and downloaded Audacity right away as suggested and played with it a little. Seems like it may be a little tough but who knows. . . . Went through and read the audio resources pages and downloaded Lame v 3.99.3 and FFmpeg v 2.2.2 successfully. The instructions were great and it was a very easy process or I just got lucky! A matter of a few clicks and it was all there. I attempted to knock out the daily creates – I was so inspired by the first one and I wanted a good picture of something here locally. Fredericksburg is so full of history and sites especially of ruins. So much is left run down and this create I really enjoyed well until I saw it on my site but not the daily create sight. Noticed my time wasn’t set correctly on my post as it was about 7:30 PM but the blog said it was published at 00:27 AM. Had to seek some advice and corrected that in the system by going to the Settings menu on the left side of WP and choosing General Settings and then corrected the time zone field. But I was also informed that I had forgotten to tag my Flickr picture . . . boy that was a bummer. So looked like I was back at square one and still needed to complete two but I wanted to share all three in my summary.
I really had fun with all three of these and it was a much better experience than prior weeks. Things are not taking as long and are more streamlined since I am understanding better. You can see my blogs about my daily creates here.
Now let’s talk about this bumper! This was a tough assignment for me and very time consuming. While I enjoyed it and loved playing with audacity it was really challenging.
Ah George’s storytelling only by sound effects audio assignment (3.5 Stars) George had a rough day and we blogged all about it. Some people are dead and he’s not taking the heat for it. I thought this audio was a little easier as I get used to using and playing around in Audacity. Sound Cloud is coming along pretty good and getting really easy. Love the drag and drop feature. Even the Mp3 files are pretty easy. You can see the blog here: Audio Assignments
More audio assignments (3.5 Stars), again these are getting easier and a little more fun as I learn to move through audacity more and more. I enjoyed putting together tracks and doing a voice recording for this assignment of a 911 call. I wish they were fun and not all serious and troubled! Here’s my blog: 911 How May I Help You?
Here are 2 more stars to add to the audio assignments. These have been very interesting and fun to work with and put together. Still need some practice but hey practice makes perfect. Here is my final assignment link: A Family Portrait
I took time to think a little and came up with a few brainstorming ideas. I created a blog and posted it here with my ideas: Brainstorm!
I watched both the Touch of Evil and Touch of Evil 1958 the Orson Welles version. Found both to be interesting but even more so listening instead of watching. I felt with the first version it was an excellent choice of theme music as it made you anticipate what is going to happen. Your mind was instantly ready for something.
I also listened to the Wednesday night ds106radio show. I enjoyed listening and tweeting along but continuously felt like I wasn’t connected because I had no way of knowing if I was doing things right for this as it was my first time tuning in.
Wrote the blog with multiple discussions on the audio storytelling at the following link: Audio Storytelling
It seems a little strange to brainstorm alone – I thought it was a group of people together brainstorming and sorting through the ideas. I use this tactic frequently but never alone.
I could see a “skit” performed mostly in audio and having a noir storyline – with the details of anything noir. Dark, stormy nights, a women in the mix, and the feeling of trouble coming.
I could also see even a discussion on Noir with questions and answers to help others understand and a short period to answer one or two of their questions.
Poetry can be very noir – readings of poetry or writing a noir poem.
You hear lots of laughter, cars, goats, the cops and their whistles, horns blowing and people talking and then bam an explosion! Totally unexpected and off line of what seemed to be going on with all the sounds and music. The second version there was a little laughter, cars, street noise and you may see people talking but you don’t really hear them. This kept the scene low-key and dramatic. It was a dramatic fade in and gets stronger and more of a beat going that stays constant. The music kind of overpowers the sounds you need to hear.
An importance in noir film I believe are the scenes and the sound effects. These create the ambiance for you and allow you to feel and believe that you are in the room with them if you are only listening to audio and not watching anything. I think about noir audio as melodramatic, music, nighttime street scenes, it’s always dark and lonely and mean sounding! Spaces and moods build audio presence and connects you to the story and what is going on. Noir is the tone an the mood – starts low key and then moves to a more high key audio/scene.
I read The Ambience of Film Noir and combine those thoughts into the above review of what I watched.
I also listened to the Wednesday night ds106radio show. I enjoyed listening and tweeting along but continuously felt like I wasn’t connected because I had no way of knowing if I was doing things right for this as it was my first time tuning in. At one point I even tweeted -“can anybody see me” hoping for some sort of tweet back . . . It wasn’t until Bond sent the list the next day with the participants that I knew things were done right. I was prepared to try again and listen to another one if necessary.
A good example of this would be Spielberg’s Close Encounter of the Third Kind.
Life takes us down many roads – our family is on the road of foster care right now . . . A special picture from that special little someone ….
This was a fun assignment (text impersonations – 2 stars) and very easy. I’m starting to like audacity, sound cloud, and even Word Press lol! Once I read this assignment while browsing through them I knew it was the right one and fit the Facebook message I had read!
It was easy having fun with this one – I have had to make two 911 calls in my lifetime. One worse than the other . . . they are hard, scary and very upsetting!! The operator is very annoying although she is just trying to do her job and get details and all you want is an ambulance or fire truck!! You are thinking – take action NOW and ask questions later!!
I tried to have a little fun with this one but as I was thinking about it, recording it and trying to make it fun I couldn’t help but keep thinking about my true experiences.
I have to say that audacity is getting easier as I learn to venture through it. I am cutting, pasting, copying, and moving tracks around, and deleting tracks if I choose not to use them. I’ve had as many as 7 tracks in one recording but it was a little bit much.
Happy listening: https://soundcloud.com/barbara-hall-11/911-whats-your-emergency
George is in a fast paced life! Nothing you can do about it – once you are in you are innnnn!
To attempt to keep up with my character and noir his sound effects story begins with a thunderstorm, I just love a good thunderstorm. Then as you walk and take care of business through the city streets all of a sudden gun shots go off. You can’t hear where they are coming from, wait there they go again – another round. They are close and then another round and you begin to see what is going on. Man you are in hot water George just knows he will get blamed for this one if he is seen in the area.
All of a sudden you can hear ambulance sounds coming closer and closer people are down and someone must have called. I have to beat feet and get the hell out of dodge or I will get blamed for this one! I’m out of here . . .
I totally enjoyed this assignment this week. I enjoyed working with audacity and trying to learn and manipulate things. I learned real fast how to delete your tracks as I experimented trying to get sound files to mix correctly. I did the best that I could but still seem to find a little gap in there. I also learned how to copy and paste and add multiple sound files and make them work together. This is very creative and in time I know I can get better and better at it. I can’t tell you how many times I deleted the entire thing and started over.
I chose two sounds, the first being music which I just liked the beat/sound of as the intro into the bumper. I then recorded something short an simple, and I must say do not like to hear myself talking. I chose the car driving away because when I think of radio I always think of being in my car. Therefore one tunes in the radio to a great station and then drives on away. You meet two destinations, one is the radio tunes that are going to take you away and then you drive to reach the real destination. They say it always takes two to tango!
The free sound file download was awesome and I can’t wait to do the next part with a story told by sounds. I actually saved some for that assignment while working on this one.
